Destination: Caen

2007-07-28 08-04 Paris, Normandie 0565 Caen, Château de Caen by Allie_CaulfieldCatch a ferry to Caen to view this bustling cultural and industrial centre with a mass of medieval 11th century abbeys and a magnificent castle.  The castle’s art collection includes Rubens and Monet and is a must-see for any visitor.  The city was founded in the 11th century by William the Conqueror who was laid to rest here.  William’s legacy remains in nearby Bayeux and its fabulous tapestry.  The second world war is commemorated in the Caen Memorial Museum.  Roam through the streets and squares to explore hidden courtyards and medieval, narrow streets.

The Caen Memorial is the second most popular museum in France (after the Louvre) and a must-see for any visitor to Caen, Normandy.  Here you can organise a tour of the landing battlefields, beaches and graveyards of the second world war.

The Caen castle is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Western Europe, built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century.  Beautifully preserved giving a fantastic view of the city.  Famous for its large, round towers, and houses the Musée des Beaux-Arts, which holds one of the world’s finest collections of European Art.

Other tourist attractions in Caen include the theme park, Festyland, the Caen Markets (at Fosse St-Julien and Place Courtonne) and the Abbaye-aux-Hommes and Abbaye-aux-Dames; two beautiful abbeys built for William and his wife, Mathilde to atone for the “sin” of their marriage.

Portsmouth

Portsmouth ferry terminal is located directly off the M27 and easily reached from London, the Midlands and the North.  The return journey sets off at 10.30am and is much quicker than the trip there.
